Losing Weight on a Chocolate Diet

Lose Weight on a Chocolate Diet

It is every dieter’s dream, or at least a female dieter’s dream, to lose weight on a chocolate diet. Is that possible? Yes, according to some physicians today. The key to successful dieting utilizing chocolate as part of that diet program is to consume the right kind of chocolate, in moderation.

What is the Right Kind of Chocolate for a Dieter to Eat?

Cacao content is important when you are attempting to choose a chocolate diet for health benefits. According to Japanese Dr. Hiroshige Itakura, in the February 24, 2007 issue of Shukan Gendai, a lifestyle magazine, consumption of the right kind of chocolate can be helpful for dieting. Only chocolate that has a higher content of cacao can be considered to be the “right kind” of chocolate. Cacao content of 70% or greater is beneficial for use in a chocolate diet.

What Does a Percentage of Cacao Content Mean?

In general terms, the percentage of cacao content is the reverse of the content of sugar in a particular chocolate. A chocolate bar that says it is 70% cacao will have about 30% sugar content. Likewise, 85% cacao chocolate will have just 15% sugar, and it will taste much less sweet than the lower cacao content bar that correspondingly has higher sugar content. When you reach content of around 90%, the taste is bitter and should be gradually introduced for best results. Dr. Itakura does say, however, that the chocolate with the highest cacao content is most effective for use in weight loss.

How Much Cacao Should Be Consumed Per Day?

Moderation is the key for consumption of any food, including chocolate. If you consume 50 grams or less per day, the equivalent of 1.8 ounces, you will be adding around 300 calories to your daily caloric total. It is important to give up that same number of calories from other foods during the day to compensate for the number of calories. If you can do this for one month, the weight loss should total 2 to 3 kilograms of weight, about 4.4 to 6.6 pounds. If this is the only change you make in your eating pattern, this is a respectable weight loss amount to achieve while you are able to enjoy eating chocolate for dieting every day. The cacao content is a definite variable, with higher cacao content chocolate allowing greater weight loss.

How Should Chocolate Be Eaten for Best Results?

Resist the urge to eat your chocolate treat quickly. Savor the flavor and let it melt in your mouth. Consume the chocolate in small bits, scattered before or during each of your three daily meals. This gives you a treat to look forward to throughout the day, and you are less likely to binge. Regular milk or white chocolate bars just won’t do the job; they are up to 50% sugar and do not have enough cacao content to be effective. Start with a dark chocolate bar with about 60% cacao, and work your way up to higher cacao content bars, such as 85% or 90% cacao content. Dark chocolates differ from lighter milk or white chocolates because they do not have milk solids and therefore have higher concentrations of cacao.

What Other Benefits are in Cacao?

The cacao content in chocolate has many beneficial qualities. To get a daily RDA percentage, it would be necessary to look at the content per 100g corresponding to the content of cacao. Higher content chocolate will have higher levels of beneficial qualities that are contained in the cacao, such as serotonin, vitamins and minerals. Cacao contains polyphenol, a substance that helps absorb glucose and burn fat. Theobromine, contained in cacao, creates the bitter flavor, but at the same time, it also can help fight stress.

Enjoy your chocolate diet by adding chocolate in moderation, and be sure to select quality chocolates that have a high cacao content to accent your other diet meals. There are many companies that produce excellent, tasty, high cacao content chocolates today.

You can even get delivery right to your home by ordering online.  Use this tasty treat sparingly to enhance your dieting results. You can have satisfaction knowing that when you reach for that dark chocolate square, you are being good about eating healthy and staying on your diet.
